Andy Reid Celebrates Super Bowl LIV Victory by Eating Vince Lombardi Trophy

MIAMI—In the wake of the Kansas City Chiefs’ first Super Bowl victory since 1969, head coach Andy Reid was discovered Tuesday morning consuming the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the commemorative award that each championship-winning team has proudly held before a national audience since 1967.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the guys,” said Reid. “They really played their tails off on Sunday. This was a total team victory; I am so happy to finally get the opportunity to eat the Lombardi Trophy.”

Reid, who first competed in the Super Bowl as a head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, said he always celebrates a victory with a good meal.

“Being in Kansas City, there’s no shortage of good barbecue. Usually I’ll have a good burger, but this seemed like a special occasion,” said Reid, wiping his mouth of pieces of silver shrapnel that were beginning to dribble out.

The Chiefs were buoyed by 3rd-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who in his second year in the NFL, won league MVP. While Mahomes threw two interceptions earlier in the game, his brilliant play eventually notched a 4th-quarter lead.

Meanwhile, San Francisco 49rs quarterback Jimmy Garropolo missed what would have been a go-ahead touchdown to a wide-open Emmanuel Sanders. Fans on the west coast were left wondering what could have been.

Upon hearing concern that future Super Bowl victors would be unable to host the Vince Lombardi Trophy, Reid grinned, slicing his steak knife through the trophy’s handle, lifting a piece to his mouth, and chewing slowly before swallowing.

“Don’t worry about that. What goes in must come out,” said Reid.
